Do I need a license to operate a boom lift in the Northern Territory?

The short answer is yes, you need a license for a boom lift or EWP over 11 meters (articulated, telescopic, hinged) in the Northern Territory.

The long answer is that operating a boom lift or elevated work platform over the height of 11 meters is considered High Risk Work (HRW) and requires the relevant ticket to operate.

The relevant ticket can be found by clicking the link below

Licenses are available across the Northern Territory and are relatively cheap and easy to acquire. Typically costing around $400 - $600 AUD and 2-3 days to complete; this ticket requiring the participant to attend in person (not online) so that practical skills are passed onto the operator.

If you are caught without a license you can expect to pay anywhere from $1000 up to $15000 in fines depending on the seriousness of the breach and a criminal record. Similar to any breach of High Risk Work laws.

If in the case that unlicensed operation of a boom type work platform leads to a workplace incident involving death or serious harm then it can be expected that the penalties might easily reach up into the millions and tens of millions of dollars for both operator and business.
